Karachi: Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi has advised the Cricket Board (PCB) to appoint specialist coaches and a powerful manger with the national team instead of a head coach.
Afridi said that a powerful manager is the need of the hour for the Pakistan team under whom specialist coaches for batting, bowling and fielding should work.
"Not appointing a head coach will be the best decision.
There should, instead, be a strong and competent manager along with assistant coaches," he said.
Afridi was of the view that the new formula will help in avoiding controversies.
"The assistant coaches will focus solely on their jobs rather than get involved in other issues. The manager will be there to look after everything. Matters will become simpler and things will go smoothly," Afridi told 'Express Tribune' daily newspaper from London where he is representing Hampshire in the English county championships.
Afridi's suggestion does not come as a surprise as since his much reported dispute with head coach, Waqar Younis, he has been critical about the role of the head coach.
Afridi, who was sacked as captain after the West Indies tour, said that appointing department specific coaches would be better for the national team.
He also felt that even if the PCB wanted to appoint a head coach in place of Waqar, it should be someone of equal stature and caliber as former Pakistan coach, Bob Woolmer.
"I won't go into the debate of whether the PCB should hire a foreign or a local coach. Pakistan just need a qualified coach. The team needs a coach like Woolmer who was qualified and had plenty of experience," said Afridi, who had announced his retirement in protest following his sacking as captain.
"I remember easily that no player had any major issues under Woolmer. He used to keep his focus on the job without having any agendas on the side," he added.
